Frequently Asked Questions
Group health insurance, sometimes referred to as “employer-based coverage,” is provided to employees either by an employer or by a group (such as a union or small business association). As opposed to individual coverage, group medical insurance can offer significant cost savings and tax benefits.
Only businesses with more than 50 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees are required to offer health benefits to their teams. But offering employer insurance plans is a great way to attract and retain top talent, no matter the size of your business.
To be eligible for group health insurance, an employee must be on payroll and the employer must pay payroll taxes. Independent contractors and seasonal or temporary employees usually don’t qualify. Employees taking unpaid leave are usually ineligible for group coverage until they return to work.
Generally, group health insurance coverage must also be offered to an employee’s spouse and dependent children until age 26.
Absolutely! Group health insurance allows employees to benefit from lower premiums, more affordable deductibles, and more options overall when compared with individual health insurance plans. There are plenty of options for small business owners who may have felt offering healthcare was out of reach. Of course, the prices of plans vary depending on the size of your business and the options you choose.
In most states, large group plans require a business to have 51 or more full-time equivalent (FTE) employees. Small group health insurance plans (SGHI) tend to be more expensive than large group plans, as small businesses cannot negotiate premiums with insurers, and SGHI is subject to more stringent requirements under the Affordable Care Act. Check out this guide to see how small group health insurance premiums are calculated under the ACA.
You betcha! The Affordable Care Act created the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) that offers a small business tax credit of up to 50% of the cost you pay for employees’ premiums. In addition, payments made toward employee health premiums are almost always tax-deductible for you and your employees.
