Payroll and HR built for businesses for mid sized businesses.

Managing payroll for a growing team means juggling multi-state compliance, benefits enrollment, hiring workflows, and HR — all at once. Gusto brings it together in one platform built to scale from 50 to 250 employees, so you can spend less time on administration and more time on your business.

Built for your team's scale

From 50 employees to 250, Gusto handles every payroll run in minutes. Bulk compensation changes, multiple pay schedules, and unlimited payroll runs are included — no add-ons, no per-run fees.

Multi-state compliance, handled

Gusto automatically calculates, files, and pays federal, state, and local taxes in all 50 states — including new hire reporting, garnishments, and state-specific rules. When you expand to a new state, Gusto registers your business and keeps you compliant from day one.

HR that replaces three separate tools

Gusto combines payroll, benefits administration, time tracking, onboarding, performance management, and HR workflows in one platform. Growing teams typically replace a standalone HRIS, a benefits broker system, and a compliance tool — all with Gusto.

Replace your HR stack — payroll, benefits, time tracking, and HR in one place.

For businesses with 50 to 250 employees, Gusto replaces the need for separate HR, payroll, and benefits systems. Benefits enrollment, time tracking, onboarding, performance reviews, hiring workflows, workers' comp, and compliance are all built in and connected. Bulk compensation changes and automated workflows save your HR team hours every week. AI-powered reporting gives managers visibility into labor costs, headcount, and team performance — without pulling data from multiple systems. Integrations with QuickBooks, Xero, and leading 401(k) and benefits providers mean Gusto fits into the tools your finance and benefits teams already use.

FAQ

For a business with 50 to 250 employees, payroll software needs to go beyond basic pay processing. As teams grow, payroll typically spans multiple states, pay schedules, and employee types — which means the software must handle multi-state tax registration, automated compliance updates, garnishments, and new hire reporting automatically.

At this scale, payroll software also needs to connect with HR. Benefits enrollment, time tracking, PTO, and onboarding all feed into payroll, so disconnected systems create errors and wasted time. The best platforms for mid-sized businesses combine payroll, HR, and benefits in one place, with reporting tools that give managers visibility into labor costs and headcount.

Gusto handles all of this for businesses in the 50–250 employee range — including multi-state compliance in all 50 states, automated tax filing, benefits administration, and HR workflows — with plans that scale as your team grows.

When choosing payroll software, it’s important to think about what features are included as well as what your business needs. Many payroll providers charge extra for things like unlimited payroll runs or two-day direct deposit. These are included with all of Gusto’s plans at no extra cost. For medium-sized businesses that need more powerful tools like time tracking, multi-state tax filing, and more complex reporting and team management, our Plus plan has it all.

It’s a lot, including automated payroll, taxes and filings, time tracking, employee management, and more. See our full features list here.
