Tin Pot Creamery works with Gusto
Lots of people love freshly baked treats and ice cream, but for Becky Sunseri, a pastry chef and the founder of Tin Pot Creamery, they’re her passion.
“I’ve loved ice cream my whole life — I actually wrote my first ice cream menu when I was 15 years old,” she says. Once she was older, she “would go home after pastry school and bring all my goodies, and I would chop them up and mix them into ice cream.”
Tin Pot Creamery started as an ice cream of the month club in 2012. A year later, Becky opened the first brick and mortar location in Palo Alto; in 2014, her staff nearly doubled to 32 when she opened a second store in Los Altos. Their menu changes seasonally and there is a strong emphasis on organic and local ingredients.

Every second counts
Becky says she quickly realized that what makes her business successful is her team. “We haven’t been able to hire fast enough,” she says. That pace has made the employee self-onboarding feature a huge timesaver; new hires fill in their own information, so Becky is free from manual data entry and paperwork. This means her staff are able to get paid—and get to work—more quickly.
“I never had enough time to do everything, especially in the beginning, and I’m always looking for ways to make business more efficient,” Becky says. They’ve been through three point of sale systems and three scheduling systems, but she feels she hit a homerun when she found Gusto. “It allows me to just do what I need to do, and move on and run my business.”
The fact that no training is needed to use Gusto is another bonus; it’s easy to use right out of the gate, so she can easily train someone else to do payroll in the future. “Every second of time that I can save is amazing,” she says. “Anything that allows me to have even just one more minute to do what I love is really important for me.”
I’ve realized just how many people it takes to run an operation like this — and I’m so grateful to have such a wonderful team.
It’s all about the people
Becky knows her employees are integral to her success; for her, paying employees is one of the most important things a business owner can do. Since she’s often busy with other things, she appreciates the email reminders she receives from Gusto when important deadlines are coming up.
“This store isn’t about me; it’s about my employees. I’ve realized just how many people it takes to run an operation like this — and I’m so grateful to have such a wonderful team,” says Becky.
