1% for the Planet was created by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, in 2002 to help prevent greenwashing and build better business. As a founding ethos, it doesn’t get any nobler than that. It’s no wonder, then, that their team is made up of motivated individuals and their company culture is vibrant. And tight-knit teams like theirs are exactly the types of businesses Gusto loves to support.
“We are all really enthusiastic, like go-getter, wanna-save-the-earth kind of people.” That’s Renee Bornstein, 1% for the Planet’s Finance and Accounting Manager. She’s been working with 1% for the Planet for nearly three years. “The energy that we have together is unbelievably cool. We all get along really well, and we respect each other. It’s just a great group of people.”
When Renee started at 1% for the Planet, as a contracted bookkeeper, she could count the number of employees on her fingers. Today, she would need a few more hands. There are 34 as of this writing, and they expect to have 50 by the end of the 2022.
Why the rapid expansion? Because more and more businesses and individuals are realizing the urgency of their mission. With our natural resources and global ecosystems depleting at an unprecedented rate, the work that 1% for the Planet supports is becoming more essential with each passing day.
1% for the Planet fosters environmental stewardship by advising their members on strategic giving and then certifying that businesses donate 1% of their annual revenue to vetted environmental partners. Members can support a range of focus areas to include climate, food, land, pollution, water, wildlife, and environmental justice.
Just like the businesses they work with, their workforce is spread across the country. There are pockets of employees as far afield as Oregon, Wisconsin, South Carolina, and near their headquarters in Burlington, VT. Needless to say, much of their team works remotely.
I think that if we didn’t have a partnership with Gusto, we wouldn’t have the ability to have fully remote employees in any state where we find the right person.
“Gusto has made managing remote employees really easy for us,” says Renee. “I think that if we didn’t have a partnership with Gusto, we wouldn’t have the ability to have fully remote employees in any state where we find the right person. It’s such an amazing benefit to have the freedom to know that we can live anywhere and work from anywhere. We know that Gusto can help us with tax filings and compliance, so it’s pretty cool.”
Besides tax filings and compliance, Gusto’s onboarding features have helped smooth this period of major growth. It’s easier to move faster with employee documents organized in one place and automated notifications that prevent Renee from having to chase down signatures and address changes.
Gusto is great for us. It’s really easy for me to manage, as the person who actually runs payroll, but it’s also really nice for our employees.
“Gusto is great for us. It’s really easy for me to manage, as the person who actually runs payroll, but it’s also really nice for our employees. The platform is easy for them to use. It’s been really helpful for us. And people love getting the cute [payday] emails.”
So while Gusto might not be leading the fight to end climate change or protect the rainforest, we’re proud to be building the tools that help 1% for the Planet make a real difference.
