“I didn’t look anywhere else for health insurance. It was just too easy to do it through Gusto because it’s linked to my payroll. I don’t have to put time or effort into managing that.”

Frequently asked questions

The cost depends on the health plan you choose and how much of the cost you decide to cover as the employer. Because small group insurance rates are government-regulated, you’ll pay the same through Gusto as you would with any other broker, with no additional platform fee for benefits administration. Our licensed advisors can give you a real estimate based on your company size and budget.

Yes, Gusto benefits require an active Gusto payroll account. The good news: payroll and benefits are designed to work together, so deductions happen automatically and enrollment is built right into the same platform your team already uses. If you’re not on Gusto payroll yet, it’s easy to get started.

Most insurance carriers require at least one W-2 employee (other than the owner). Eligibility rules vary by state and carrier. Our licensed advisors can confirm what’s available for your specific situation, including alternative options like a health allowance if group coverage isn’t available to you yet.

Gusto manages the renewal process on your behalf — including exploring and presenting plan options, working with employees during open enrollment, and submitting paperwork directly to your carrier. Your employees can enroll, add dependents, and make changes entirely online in their own Gusto account.

Every team is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Our licensed advisors will help you figure out what makes sense for your budget and build a package your team will actually value.

Yes, Gusto’s health benefits advisors are fully licensed professionals with years of experience. They’re available by phone or email to help you and your employees understand your options, compare plans, and make the right decisions for your team. There’s no extra charge to talk to an advisor.

There’s no minimum — really! Businesses with only an owner can set up a 401(k) and start saving for retirement.

Yes, businesses setting up a new 401(k) can claim up to $16,500 in credits over the first three years, which can cover up to 100% of fees. Gusto will help you prep those forms so you’ll actually see those savings come tax time.6

You may be required to. More than 15 states now require certain employers—including some with as few as one employee—to offer a retirement savings benefit. Requirements vary by state, so check whether your business is affected here.
