The Gusto MCP server is Gusto’s official Model Context Protocol server, which connects your Gusto payroll and people data to AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT. MCP is an open standard rather than a one-off integration, so the Gusto MCP server also works with MCP-compatible clients that Gusto has not shipped named support for. Once connected, an AI assistant reads your live Gusto data and can act in your real Gusto account, with no import, no copying and nothing to keep in sync. See Gusto MCP for more.
To connect Gusto to Claude or ChatGPT, add the Gusto connector at mcp.api.gusto.com and sign in with your existing Gusto account. The connection inherits the permissions you already have, so your password is never handed to the AI tool. Connections can be authorized by full and primary admins, and can be revoked at any time.

Using the Gusto CLI requires comfort with a terminal, not the ability to write code. Installation takes one command, signing in takes one more, and simple lookups work right away. Commands read like plain instructions, so they're easy to guess even before you've learned them. Access is limited to your own Gusto sign-in, and anything consequential needs your explicit go-ahead before it happens. Credentials stay with Gusto and are never handed to a third-party tool. Connections are limited to full and primary admins and can be revoked at any time. If an agent tries to make a change on your behalf, it has to stop and get your confirmation first — it can't push a change through on its own.
An AI assistant connected to Gusto can read the Gusto data the authorizing user already has permission to see, and nothing beyond it. Read coverage spans employees, contractors, payrolls, timesheets, jobs, compensation, pay schedules, departments, and company records. Information in your own records — like employee names or job titles — is always treated as data to read, never as an instruction to follow.
Gusto works with Claude and ChatGPT through official connectors, and with any MCP-compatible client through the Gusto MCP server. Gusto’s connector is listed in Anthropic’s connector directory, so it is Gusto’s own server rather than a community build. Coding agents including Claude Code and Cursor can drive the Gusto CLI directly. Gus and Gusto Cofounder are Gusto’s own AI, while the Gusto MCP and CLI bring Gusto into the AI you already use. Gus is an assistant inside the Gusto web app, for when you are already in the product. Cofounder is Gusto’s proactive agent in its own app. The MCP and CLI work the other way round: the assistant or agent you already chose calls Gusto’s tools, alongside every other tool it is connected to. Many customers will want both.
