Salary is usually considered as your gross annual earnings before any taxes or deductions. When you get a new job, typically this is the number they will offer you, which will differ from what you receive in take-home pay. If you’re unsure what your annual salary is, you can look at your most recent paystub and find the “earnings” or “gross earnings” line item. Gross earnings are usually right at the top, before any taxes or deductions are taken out.
Once you have that number, you need to multiply it by how many paychecks you receive each year. If you’re paid monthly, you can multiply that number by 12 to get your annual salary. If you’re paid biweekly (every other week), you’ll receive 26 paychecks each year. If you’re paid semi-monthly (twice a month), you’ll receive 24 paychecks a year, and if you’re paid weekly, you’ll receive 52 paychecks each year.
For example, if your gross earnings are $2,000 and you get paid every other Friday (biweekly), your annual salary would be 2,000 × 26 = $52,000. The cost of benefits provided by your employer, such as healthcare and retirement, are not usually considered part of your salary, but it’s important to consider them when thinking about how much you make. Some paystubs will include the employer contribution for these perks.
Of course you can easily use our calculator to get a breakdown of how salary checks are calculated and where everything goes, but if you want to see how it works behind the scenes, here’s a quick overview:
Start with Your Annual Salary: This is the total amount you earn in a year. For example, if your annual salary is $60,000, that’s your base figure.
Determine Pay Frequency: Your salary check amount depends on how often you’re paid. Common pay frequencies are monthly, biweekly (every other week), semi-monthly (twice a month), or weekly.Monthly: Divide your annual salary by 12. So, $60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000 per month.
Biweekly: Divide your annual salary by 26. So, $60,000 ÷ 26 = approximately $2,307 per biweekly paycheck.
Weekly: Divide your annual salary by 52. So, $60,000 ÷ 52 = approximately $1,154 per week.
Adjust for Deductions: Your gross salary (before deductions) is what you earn, but your actual paycheck will be less after taxes and other deductions. Common deductions include federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any voluntary deductions like retirement contributions or health insurance.
Calculate Net Pay: To find out what you actually take home, subtract these deductions from your gross pay. For example, if your biweekly gross pay is $2,307 and you have $500 in deductions, your net pay would be $1,807.
Taxes and deductions vary based on the filing status of the earner (single, married, etc.), how many dependents they claim, and what state they live and work in. Some states levy income tax against earners, while other states do not. Federal income taxes are also progressive, meaning the more you earn, the higher percentage you’ll pay in taxes.
For example, if that $1,000 paycheck is for someone who gets paid monthly, their annual salary would be only $12,000, and they would be exempt from federal income tax, but would still owe 7.65% in FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare). If an earner receives $1,000 paycheck every week ($52,000 annual salary), they would pay out 8.18% in federal income tax ($81.85) plus 7.65% in FICA ($76.50), making their take-home pay $841.65 from every $1,000 paycheck.

A paystub is a document that details your earnings and deductions for a specific pay period. It’s like a summary of your paycheck. While most paystubs are somewhat unique to the business that sends them out, they all share a few common elements:
Company Information: This includes the name and address of your employer, and sometimes the company’s logo.
Employee Information: Your name, address, and sometimes your employee ID or department.
Pay Period: The start and end dates of the pay period (when you earned the money you’re receiving), and the date the paycheck was issued.
Gross Pay: The total amount you earned before any deductions. This is usually broken down by regular hours or salary, overtime, bonuses, and any other earnings.
Deductions: A list of all the amounts taken out of your gross pay. This often includes:Federal Income Tax: The amount withheld for federal taxes
State and Local Taxes: Any applicable state and local taxes
FICA: The amounts withheld for Social Security and Medicare
Other Deductions: This can include retirement contributions, health insurance premiums, or any other voluntary deductions
No. The frequency of your paycheck—whether you’re paid monthly, biweekly, or weekly—doesn’t affect the total amount of taxes you owe over the year. Taxes owed are based on your annual income, not how often you’re paid. The main difference is how much is withheld from each paycheck. The more often you get a paycheck, the less is taken out each time, but it will still add up to the same amount withheld against your tax bill at the end of the year.

After subtracting all the deductions from your gross pay, you get your net pay, which is the amount you actually take home.
Gross pay isn’t so much a method as a way of talking about earnings. When you hear the salary for a job, most people and employers are referring to gross pay. This is the worker’s total compensation before any taxes or deductions are taken out. Since taxes and deductions are specific to each worker in each state, gross pay allows you to make a more apples-to-apples comparison. But it’s important to remember when you are quoted a salary in gross pay, your take-home pay each paycheck will be less.

Of course! Selecting which state you pay taxes in is one of the first questions we ask. This is because income tax rates vary from state to state, and there are nine states that don’t levy any income tax at all! If you’re thinking about relocating to another state, a salary paycheck calculator is a great way to compare your relative tax burden from state to state.
Since most salaried positions aren’t eligible for overtime pay, we don’t include that option in our salary paycheck calculator. However, starting July 1, 2024, new federal regulations mandate that salaried workers earning less than $43,888 per year are required to be paid overtime. If your salaried job is eligible for overtime pay, it’s best to use our hourly paycheck calculator instead. Once you figure out your equivalent hourly pay based on your current annual salary, you can easily add overtime pay into the calculator.
If you’re a salaried employee who qualifies for overtime pay, you should first figure out your equivalent hourly pay based on your annual salary.
For example, if you make $40,000 a year, and you’re working a standard five-day workweek, here’s how you’d break it down:
Annual Salary: $40,000
Base Hours Per Week: 40
Weeks Per Year: 52
So, the total number of hours worked in a year is 40 hours/week × 52 weeks/year = 2,080 hours.
Now, divide the annual salary by the total hours: $50,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $24.04 per hour. Easy peasy! If you’re working with a monthly salary instead, just divide the annual amount by 12 to get the monthly number, and then use the same approach.
If you have a few weeks of paid vacation each year, you don’t need to make any changes to this calculation, as your employer will be treating those weeks as if you’re working regular hours as far as paychecks are concerned.
But if you want to know the effective hourly rate including vacation time, you can subtract those weeks from the total number worked. So for three weeks of vacation, you would use 40 hours/week × 49 weeks/year = 1,960 hours, which comes out to $25.51 per hour. Now that you have your hourly wage, you can add your overtime pay based on how many additional hours you work. Let’s say in the same example, you normally work 50 hours per week, which is 10 hours of overtime each week. If your overtime rate is the same as your regular rate, that would be an extra $192.30 per week. How much this affects each paycheck will depend on how often you’re paid. Calculations can get more complex if you’re paid semi-monthly rather than every other week, which is why we recommend using our hourly paycheck calculator if you need to calculate overtime pay.
