Building for the Long Term

We started Gusto with a simple belief: small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. And they deserve a partner that is committed to making their life better.

With 500,000+ small business customers, we still feel like we’re early in our journey. Starting and running a small biz remains more difficult than it should be: the demands keep coming, complexity stacks up, laws change, and there's always more to navigate. Often, the business owner feels like they’re on their own, trying to figure it all out. Helping them is why we exist. And we are committed to building Gusto for the long term.

We began with payroll, because getting people paid accurately and on time is fundamental. Then we added health benefits, retirement plans, tax credits, compliance filings, and much more. Every area we’ve expanded into started with talking to small businesses, hearing what their pain points were, and then building a solution that gives them peace of mind, while also providing them superpowers to progress their business. Small businesses employ countless people in our communities, drive local economies, and deserve the same quality of experience that only large enterprises have historically benefited from.

Today, we're sharing that Gusto has surpassed $1 billion in 12-month trailing revenue. To us, it's more than a number. It represents the trust we've earned from more than half a million small businesses. We're proud to serve each one of them, delivering peace of mind and helping them grow and thrive. Fortune recently talked with some of our customers about this milestone.

And what gets us most excited is what's ahead. We believe we're on the verge of a new era for the small business economy. Today, small businesses employ roughly one-third of the U.S. workforce, and with the tailwinds helping small businesses, we see that number growing dramatically. Gusto can be their proactive partner, taking hats off their head, and making their life easier than ever before.

With this milestone, we want to shine a spotlight on small businesses and the important work each of you do every day. If you are a customer, thank you for trusting Gusto, and please keep sending us feedback. We strive every day to get better, and we are here to serve you.

With Gusto,

Josh

P.S. I share updates with Gusto investors on a regular basis, and I wanted to publicly share my most recent update (which includes the $1b revenue milestone). Here’s a link to read it on LinkedIn and on X. This is the most amazing time of my life to be a builder, and I pinch myself every day thinking about what’s now possible for us to do, in service of our mission. We’re here to help small businesses, and if you’re interested in our mission, please reach out! Either to partner, or join the journey.
