When the Gusto plugin in ChatGPT first launched, it helped small businesses with two main tasks: answering questions about payroll and people data, and running simple payroll that was already set up. But small businesses still spend a disproportionate amount of time doing admin work, and not enough time doing more of what they love, whether that’s serving their customers or growing the business they’ve worked hard to build.
That’s why we’re announcing new ways the Gusto plugin in ChatGPT can take on more of the day-to-day running of a business: prepping and running complex payrolls, staying ahead of compliance before tax time, and saving hours through automation. Gusto is a teammate, one that works with you, wherever you already are.
With the right data and context about their people, hours, and pay, owners can spend less time on preparing payroll and more time building their businesses.
Take a business with a dozen employees during payroll week. Normally, that means chasing hours down from a spreadsheet, confirming a new hire's details actually made it into the system, and double-checking a bonus before approving the run.
With the Gusto plugin in ChatGPT, a business can now say what they need to prep payroll. "Gusto, help me run payroll and flag any issues?" ChatGPT then brings in the relevant context it already has from the business and Gusto to pull the pieces together: hours worked and tips from a spreadsheet, a bonus, or time off. If something is blocking the run, it surfaces exactly what and why.
Five new ways small businesses can put Gusto’s plugin to work:
Apply bonuses or tips to payroll: "Gusto, add these quarter-end bonuses to the upcoming payroll run"
Fix a timesheet: "Gusto, update [employee’s] hours"
Send payroll cost to your budget: "Gusto, pull this period's labor cost and add it to my budget sheet"
Pull org data on demand: "Gusto, who's missing a manager or start date on my team?"
Calculate a reasonable salary: “Gusto, how much should I pay myself?”
Businesses stay in control
Gusto can prepare the work and flag what needs attention, but business owners review and approve anything that actually affects their payroll before it runs.
“I use the Gusto app in ChatGPT to turn our payroll information into practical staffing and financial models,” says Andre Butler, Director of Operations at Blue Ridge Command Commercial Cleaning, based in Winchester, Virginia.
“I can quickly see how changing an employee’s hours or pay, adding a new hire, or taking on a new cleaning contract could affect our labor costs, margins, and cash flow before making a decision.”
What's Next
We're starting by doing more of the work that leads up to running payroll, including pulling the right information together and surfacing what needs a second look whether it’s timesheets or time off. In the coming weeks, the Gusto plugin in ChatGPT will help with even more, managing cash flow to onboarding employees to viewing benefit options.
