An Open Letter to University Students: Could Gusto Spell True (Career) Love for You?

An open letter to university students

Hi, it’s Gusto. We haven’t really put ourselves out there before, but this year we decided that it was time to fully commit…to campus recruiting.

Hearts on our sleeves, we set out to make a good impression. But first, we spent some time working on ourselves, reflecting on what we can bring to a working relationship, and defining what we’re looking for in new graduate hires.

About us

We’ll be upfront — we’re looking for a long-term relationship because our mission, to create a world where work empowers a better life, is really ambitious. Sure, we also have some shiny perks, but first and foremost, we care about solving meaningful problems for our customers while creating a work environment that embodies our values.

We help entrepreneurs and small business owners focus on running their companies and taking care of their teams, without having to be experts in payroll, benefits, or HR. They can leave the heavy lifting to Gusto. That’s why over 40,000 small businesses across the country have fallen in love with us. We hope you will, too!

Let’s get to know each other better

This year, we’re hiring nearly 50 new graduates to join the Customer Experience (CX) team in our Denver office. The CX team interacts directly with our customers, whether they’re helping business owners pay employees, offer health insurance, or stay compliant with the law. The CX team also works cross-functionally, playing an important role in improving our product by sharing trends and insights about customers.

To make sure customer service continues to be what sets Gusto apart, we’re looking for candidates who have attributes like organization, time management, attention to detail, comfort with ambiguity, resourcefulness, and perseverance.

Besides valuing those characteristics, we also care about diversity. Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We want our team to reflect our incredibly diverse customers in order to build the best product and service for them.

That’s why we’ve set a goal for at least 50% of our university hires to come from underrepresented backgrounds.

We also chose the universities on our campus recruiting tour, including four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), specifically because the schools attract top students from underrepresented groups.

We think Gusto is an ideal match for recent grads who are early in their careers and want to find a vibrant, supportive environment where they can grow both professionally and personally. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto. Check out our job openings at gusto.com/students.

Yours truly,

Maryanne Brown Caughey
