Recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities and showcase inclusive employment practices and policies. This year’s NDEAM theme—“Disability: Part of the Equity Equation”—explores how organizations and employers can create more equitable work opportunities and more inclusive workplace experiences for people with disabilities.
As part of NDEAM, we interviewed Gusto employment attorney Kevin Fritz. Kevin opens up about his experiences as someone with muscular dystrophy, discusses how he built his impressive law career, and shares his thoughts on how employers can better accommodate and support workers with disabilities. In an ever-changing labor market—where job openings are plentiful and employee quits are at historic levels—employee retention is more important than ever. Keeping talented workers engaged and happy is crucial to achieving greater workplace productivity and raking in greater profits.
Recently, Gusto surveyed more than 800 HR practitioners and 700 employees from growing companies to find out how employee longevity and engagement translate to corporate impact. Here are just a couple key findings:
- Retention yields returns: 73% of HR professionals said that an employee who had been with the firm for three years versus six months was between 25–200% more productive.
- Employee engagement affects output: 85% of employees say they’re at least 50% more productive when they’re excited about their work than if they feel neutral about it.

CA ramps reporting requirements
Heads up, California business owners: The laws around pay transparency and employee data reporting are changing. On September 27, 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 1162, a bill that expands the state’s existing pay transparency and employee data reporting laws. Here are some of the main updates, taking effect on January 1, 2023:
- All employers—upon request—must provide a current employee with the pay scale for the position they’re employed in.
- All employers have to maintain records of a job title and wage rate history for each employee for a specified timeframe.
- Employers with 15 or more employees must include the pay scale for a position in a job posting.
- All California private employers with 100 or more employees must submit a pay data report on or by the second Wednesday of May 2023. The report has to include data on the number of employees, their median and mean hourly rate, and their hours worked for each combination of race, ethnicity, and sex within in a handful of different job categories.
