What is minimum wage?

Minimum wage is the lowest hourly pay an employer can legally give a worker. It’s meant to make sure people earn a basic income for their time on the job. In the U.S., there’s a federal rate, but states (and even cities) can set their own. That’s why the amount can vary a lot depending on where you work.

How does the state minimum wage differ from the federal rate?

Right now, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. It’s been stuck there since 2009. But most states think that’s too low, so they’ve raised their own minimums. In places like California or Washington, the rate is much higher.

Some states adjust their minimum wage every year to keep up with inflation. Others make changes only when new laws get passed. So yeah, it can look pretty different from state to state.

Are employers required to pay the higher of state or federal minimum wage?

They are. Employers have to go with whatever rate is higher. So if your city has a $15 minimum wage, that’s what you should be getting, even though the federal rate is still $7.25.

Bottom line: the law that gives you more pay wins.

Does minimum wage apply to all workers, including tipped employees?

Not really. Tipped workers, like servers or bartenders, follow a different rule. The federal tipped minimum wage is $2.13 an hour, but that only works if your tips get you to at least $7.25 an hour overall. If not, your employer has to cover the gap.

Some states don’t allow this lower tipped wage at all. They require employers to pay the full state minimum no matter what. So again, it depends on where you live.

Can minors be paid less than the minimum wage?

Sometimes, yes. There’s a special rate for workers under 20. The minimum wage is $4.25 an hour for the first 90 days of the job. After that, they have to be paid the regular minimum wage.

Still, a lot of employers just stick with the standard rate. It’s easier and keeps things consistent, especially in states that don’t allow the youth rate.

How often does the minimum wage change?

There’s no set timeline. The federal rate hasn’t changed in over ten years. But many states (and some cities) raise their rates more often, usually once a year, especially if they tie them to inflation.

If you’re not sure what the current rate is where you live, check your state’s labor department website. That’s where you’ll find the latest info.
