Health problems inspired Andrea Talley to try a raw diet for six months, which introduced her to green smoothies — and before long, she was hooked. She started making smoothies for friends and family, then expanded into the community and local festivals, selling out quickly.
An Indiegogo campaign helped her launch GreenLid, a restaurant chain in San Francisco, two years ago. Andrea says it’s all about creating healthy food fast: “I started GreenLid with the goal to make healthy food really accessible and undeniably delicious for everybody.”
I never have to worry about calculating, paying, or filing taxes, which has taken a huge weight off my shoulders.
Hiring GreenLid’s first employee was a huge milestone. Andrea used Intuit’s Online Payroll, an all-in-one system that covers processes like bookkeeping and payroll, but wasn’t happy with the process. “The drawback is that the payroll system wasn’t that great,” she explains. “I spent five to 10 hours every month on payroll-related activities; I wanted to worry less about my taxes.”
She started looking for an alternative, and came across Gusto. Now, payroll only takes her one to two hours.
“Gusto looks after my payroll taxes automatically—including state and federal taxes—as well as W-2 forms,” Andrea says. “I never have to worry about calculating, paying, or filing taxes, which has taken a huge weight off my shoulders.”
She also likes the user-friendly interface and appreciates the employee portal, which gives her staff lifetime access to paystubs and other personal information. “Gusto helps me take really good care of my team, which is something that’s super important to me.”

“As a small business owner, my time is everything to me,” says Andrea. With Intuit, she was spending a lot of time learning about how to accurately do payroll, which took her away from learning about how to grow her business. As a small business owner, she started GreenLid to focus on her product but quickly learned how much needs to happen behind the scenes.
Now, Andrea can save her energy and focus on the things that help GreenLid thrive. “Gusto gives me more time to be in the business—like thinking about our products, and our quality and sourcing—and doing the types of things that I started the business to do.”
