Last year, Americans donated over 316 billion dollars to nonprofit organizations. While the tremendous amount given to charity every year is certainly heartwarming, it can also be daunting. Is it possible for individuals to make an impact?
Yes! In fact, individuals donate over five times as much as all foundations combined, representing 72% of all charitable giving.
Today we’re happy to share that Gusto is now making charitable giving easier than ever. Whether you already donate to a charity that you care about, or you’d like to start, all employees can now contribute to nonprofit organizations directly from their paycheck!
Here’s what you should know about Gusto Giving:
- We’re working with FirstGiving to disburse funds directly from your pay to the causes you care about. We’ll handle the deductions, processing, and reporting — all for free and with lots of love. Gusto does not make any money from processing your donations.
- Donations are 100% tax-deductible. We’ll track and itemize them automatically on your pay stub.
- To save you the hassle of keeping receipts and remembering to fill in all your donations when doing taxes, we’ll automatically document everything on your W-2 at the end of the year.

With over 820,000 charities in the United States alone, discovering worthy causes to support can be difficult. To that end, we will feature three charities on a rotating basis, one from each of these broad categories: poverty, education, and healthcare.
Poverty
Farming is the dominant economic activity of the world’s poor. One Acre Fund fights extreme poverty and hunger in East Africa by providing farmers with the training, inputs, and credit they need to generate double their income on every planted acre. We love that One Acre Fund is optimizing a fundamental need in the developing world.
Education
Room to Read is dedicated to promoting and enabling education through programs focused on literacy and gender equality in education. They establish school libraries, build schools, publish local-language children’s books, train teachers on literacy education, and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills necessary to succeed in school and beyond.
Healthcare
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. The ACS has presence in more than 5,200 communities and are working to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays – a world where cancer never steals another year from anyone’s life.
We’re proud to highlight three deserving non-profit organizations so you can learn more about what they do. Of course, if you’re already donating to a specific charity or you have one in mind, we support payments to any 501(c)3 organization.
We want to make it easy for everyone to support whatever matters most to them. Today’s launch merely scratches the surface of what is possible; other automated payroll features, like employer matching programs, are coming soon!
From all of us at Gusto, we’re excited for the opportunity to give back this holiday season, and beyond. We hope you’ll join us!
