Portland, OR Summary

For a taste of the big city’s glamour with the environmental awareness and unstudied charm of a small town, visit Portland, Oregon. It is commonly referred to as the “Rose City” because of its exceptional climate for growing roses. There are a few public gardens that are definitely worth a visit. The Japanese Garden is considered to be one of the most authentic Japanese gardens located outside Japan. The Classical Chinese Garden offers a counterpoint to the Japanese Garden, providing a serene location for relaxation. Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of blossoms ready for their close-ups. If outdoor activities are important, this is the city for you. In fact, Outside magazine named Portland one of its 10 Greatest Places to Live. Hiking, biking, and skiing lead the list of outdoor activities; hikers are especially fond of the miles of trails found in Forest Park.

Is sampling local wares more of an interest than outdoor activities? You’re in luck. Portland is considered to be the microbrewery capital of the United States. There are 33 independent breweries within the city limits – more than any other city in the world. A number of festivals are held throughout the year in celebration of beer. Some of the breweries are located in the Pearl District – a former warehouse area of Portland that has been transformed into the creative center of the city. A combination of residential, commercial, and artistic endeavors, it is a true jewel. Take the Streetcar and enjoy a tour of the district before alighting near one of the many jewelry boutiques or art galleries.
