The Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas is home to the world’s largest golden nugget. It’s the size of a baby, and it’s on display next to the gift shop. Ostentatious? Hardly. This is Las Vegas. The Golden Nugget is the only four-star hotel downtown, and it deserves this rating. In the guest rooms, rich browns and accents of cream and rust complement the elegant furnishings. Gilded Age touches like ceiling friezes, bed curtains, and spiral staircases make the rooms and suites worthy of consideration. Compared to the behemoths on the Strip, the Golden Nugget looks modest (if that’s possible in this town), but it’s got class that its rivals down the road can’t touch. You’ll feel as though you ought to wear a suit here, just because it fits the decor so nicely. Everything appears to be gold-plated (brass, in reality; the marble columns, too, are faux), and the burnished glow you see is partly the result of the amazing transformation Steve Wynn wrought here during his stewardship (which ended in 2003).

The Golden Nugget bills itself as the place to go to experience Vegas “as it used to be.” That’s not too far off, but the hotel’s being modest. A lot of the old-school charm is there, but it’s also got a lot of new gaming. It’s also a part of the long-awaited downtown revitalization project, and the pedestrian mall/casino/concert venue called the Fremont Street Experience. The prices at the Nugget are virtually unbeatable, and if you don’t mind being off the Strip, this is the most luxurious hotel you’ll find. If you need a bite to eat, The Golden Nugget still has one of the best buffets in town. Remember that old notion that food and drinks were bountiful and cheap in Las Vegas? Such a manifestation is hard to find these days, but not at the Golden Nugget. When you’re there, check out the 50-item salad bar, and the bread pudding (the recipe came straight from Steve Wynn’s mother).

Robbed in our room!

Reviewed by jbarshaw on May 30, 2008

jbarshaw's rating:

"We were robbed in our room! The management staff did nothing for us. They lied to us about speaking with their "risk management" department, refused to refund our money we had spent on show tickets because we had to go file a report at the police department, and only did an investigation after we complained to the owner. When the investigation showed that the only people in our room that day (besides us) were the maid service, they closed the investigation and said they had "satisfied their duty of care," and that was all they were legally required to do. We have never even received an apology! Their 4 diamond status is a JOKE."

Golden Trip

Reviewed by Trvl2Vegas on July 09, 2007

Trvl2Vegas' rating:

"The Golden Nugget is beautiful! The whole place has been remodeled they even have a water slide that goes through a shark tank! Unbelievable! We stayed in June and had a blast. Great food too, try the steak house, I had the best steak ever, I paid for what I got, but it was the best. The show is a lot of fun for couples too, it is called "Caveman" and it is about how men and women relate and sometimes do not... Rooms are very nice, remind me of the Marriage, we were even delivered a new bed when we called to say ours was not as comfortable as we expected, they said they were in the process of putting all new beds in. With all there is to do downtown you are really not in the room too much. Everything is within easy walking distance unlike the the strip. We usualy pick new places to stay on the strip, but I think Downtown and the Golden Nugget is our new hang out! "

Nicest hotel at Fremont Street Experience.

Reviewed by ohsostrange on December 06, 2006

ohsostrange's rating:

"Nicest hotel in the Fremont Street area. Good sized rooms with nice big closets. Great bread pudding served there. Mediocre buffet. Tickets for shows wildly overpriced, but the showroom is small enough there’s not a bad seat in the house. Reasonably loose slots in great variety. Casino incredibly crowded on weekends. Fremont Experience is great fun, but no monorail stop to the strip yet, so you have to use buses or taxis-both are easy enough to find."
