The Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas is home to the world’s largest golden nugget. It’s the size of a baby, and it’s on display next to the gift shop. Ostentatious? Hardly. This is Las Vegas. The Golden Nugget is the only four-star hotel downtown, and it deserves this rating. In the guest rooms, rich browns and accents of cream and rust complement the elegant furnishings. Gilded Age touches like ceiling friezes, bed curtains, and spiral staircases make the rooms and suites worthy of consideration. Compared to the behemoths on the Strip, the Golden Nugget looks modest (if that’s possible in this town), but it’s got class that its rivals down the road can’t touch. You’ll feel as though you ought to wear a suit here, just because it fits the decor so nicely. Everything appears to be gold-plated (brass, in reality; the marble columns, too, are faux), and the burnished glow you see is partly the result of the amazing transformation Steve Wynn wrought here during his stewardship (which ended in 2003).
The Golden Nugget bills itself as the place to go to experience Vegas “as it used to be.” That’s not too far off, but the hotel’s being modest. A lot of the old-school charm is there, but it’s also got a lot of new gaming. It’s also a part of the long-awaited downtown revitalization project, and the pedestrian mall/casino/concert venue called the Fremont Street Experience. The prices at the Nugget are virtually unbeatable, and if you don’t mind being off the Strip, this is the most luxurious hotel you’ll find. If you need a bite to eat, The Golden Nugget still has one of the best buffets in town. Remember that old notion that food and drinks were bountiful and cheap in Las Vegas? Such a manifestation is hard to find these days, but not at the Golden Nugget. When you’re there, check out the 50-item salad bar, and the bread pudding (the recipe came straight from Steve Wynn’s mother).
