Chicago is the town that gave birth to the world’s first skyscraper, in 1885, and since that time, things have just gotten taller. Of the city’s giants today, the 100-story Hancock building is not the tallest, but it has the best location — perched near the shore of Lake Michigan, at the head of a long sweep of lakefront parks, at the north end of Michigan Avenue. It also offers several options for enjoying the splendid view. However, while you’re still on the ground, take a moment to look up — this is a really tall building. Then head for the elevators. If you want an unobstructed, 360-degree view, zoom to the Hancock Observatory (your ears will pop), 1,000 feet up. The building sways slightly in the wind, so if you feel like you’re still moving when you get off the elevator, it’s not an illusion. Far below, gardens and beaches spread northward, the lake is to your east, and some of Chicago’s most impressive rooftops are at your feet. But say it’s evening and you’re looking for something more than just a nice view. Try the cocktail lounge on the 96th floor. You can’t see full circle on this level, but a good drink and comfy chair compensate. Or head for the Signature Room, which, on the 95th floor, is the highest high-end dining establishment in the city.
