Through painstaking restoration, two Victorian hotels known as the Grand Horton and the Brooklyn-Kahle Saddlery have been rebuilt and restored to form the Horton Grand Hotel. At one time, the Brooklyn was the residence of Wyatt Earp. Both hotels were slated for demolition in the 1970s; the city rescued them, and owners Dori and John Rose now welcome you to the Gaslamp Quarter with their warm California hospitality. History comes alive at the Horton. The 100-year-old oak grand staircase in the Palace Bar, for example, is from the original Grand Horton. The hotel’s restaurant, Ida Bailey’s, is named for the madam whose brothel sat on the grounds that the hotel now calls home. This Victorian elegance is a perfect fit in the heart of San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District. You can even take a horse and carriage tour of the area from the entrance. Every room here is different, but all are furnished with hand-crafted antiques such as canopied brass beds and mahogany armoires. Traditional Victorian accoutrements such as fringed lamps and lace curtains also make numerous appearances. All rooms have gas fireplaces, and many have New Orleans-style balconies as well. The Horton Grand’s romantic atmosphere is ideally suited for honeymoons or romantic getaways.
