Located just below Melrose Avenue at La Brea, Sugar is a fresh and funky boutique with clothes you’d actually wear, and prices you can (probably) afford – what a concept! The store is eight months old, and the staff is incredibly friendly, perhaps because of all the positive publicity the store has received. Regardless, you’ll find mini-cupcakes baked daily for your consumption (or just to coo over) while you check the place out. Silky and satin halter tops and low cut, sexy vests line the side racks, with brand-name denim taking center stage on the main table. J & Co., Hudson and Sasta (mostly green or brown threads) are fashionably aged and pre-ripped, ranging from $89 to $120 per pair. There are baby Ts with cheeky slogans (“My mom is hotter than your mom”), as well as shameless promotion Ts (“Sugar” with a cupcake) in adult sizes. The designers on display at Sugar have taken everyday fabrics and materials and used them for innovative creations, such as knit boots and plastic-weave, rectangle purses. If you’ve come to accessorize, head to the back, where fistfuls of vintage jewelry, mostly purples, reds and light blues, await you. Even the dressing rooms, which are relatively spacious and use broad cloth curtains, have a cute, vintage feel to them.
