"Nobody walks in L.A." Truer words were never sung, and nobody knows this better than Robert E. Petersen and his wife, Margie, the folks behind Petersen Automotive Museum. Founded in 1994 as an independent non-profit organization, the four-story building, complete with a hands-on science exhibit for kids, is located on Museum Row on the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax. Across from larger and stuffier museums (LACMA), this one will attract boys and girls of all ages. Gruesome trivia: Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie Smalls) was shot in the parking garage. Generally speaking, it’s a very safe area, and the history is much happier once you’re inside the museum. Regular exhibits at Petersen Automobile Museum include vintage cars, vintage gas stations and a 100-year walk-through history of the car in Southern California, complete with musical accompaniment from each decade depicted. Seasonal exhibits of the past (that will possibly be rotated in and out in the future) include Million Dollar Cars, The Golden Years of Drag Racing, Batmobiles and Celebrity Cars, though that’s fairly redundant considering what you’ll see on the street for free just driving around. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Group and school tours are available for this quintessentially Los Angeles venue.
