The city’s premiere independent exhibitor, the Nuart Theatre practically invented the term “cult film.” Going strong after 30 years, during most of which the Nuart has been owned by the art-house chain Landmark Theatres, the Nuart doesn’t bother screening anything you could see anywhere else. The fare here is tiny-budget indies from the festival circuit, documentaries, and rocumentaries like the Sex Pistols’ “The Filth and the Fury” and the Beasties Boys’ new home movie “Awesome: I F**kin’ Shot That!” New wave gems including Goddard’s “Masculine Feminine” and newly struck prints of black and white classics such as “On the Waterfront” and “From Here to Eternity” draw crowds, and the horror fantasy “Night Watch” was as big a smash here as it was in its native Russia. Vincent Gallo and Penelope Spheeris stop in for Q & A when their films open, and runs at the Nuart have been instrumental to the careers of Gus Van Sant, David Lynch, John Waters and John Woo. “The Blair Witch Project” sold out for months, and the list goes on. Saturdays at midnight, the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” screenings rock on; on Fridays, the bewitching hour brings lesser-known fun with the Cine Insomnia series. Before or after, eat at Lulu’s Blue Plate or at one of the many Japanese restaurants on Sawtelle Boulevard.
